We’ve Arrived to TX2K25

The research, the late nights, the seat time at the home track — it all boils down to this week long event. TX2K is where some of the world’s fastest meet head to head for drag racing & roll racing. And of course an event THIS big with some of the FASTEST happens in Texas.

We’ve had Thomas’s Mustang on here a few times already. Last year he made a name for himself at TX2K, “The flyin’ 3V”. Hell, I even have a shirt showing it at a 45 degree angle with the nose pointing up as he launched at the light. This year, the shop I work at was a proud sponsor, so I was finally able to make it out to one of the biggest drag racing events in the country. I’ve been wanting to make it out to 2K since this event took place out in Houston. But as I’m always late to the party, I was finally able to make it to this event – now happening out in Ennis, Tx. We met up with Thomas on Thursday night & walked the pit area to get an idea of what we were expecting tomorrow morning. I feel like I missed the GTR giveaway or something, but all jokes aside -there were so many incredible vehicles that had already been throwing up some amazing times, or getting ready to.

Friday morning was all business. We were joined by some great guys who helped prep & check the Mustang to make sure each pass would allow for a solid hit, and let Thomas do what he needed to do behind the wheel. Shout out to Frank O., Josh S., and Ruben C. – who were all hands on deck to make sure the 3V was ready. Sometimes when seeing the videos of the runs, you forget to consider what it took to get there. A lot of the guys out there were constantly checking things on their vehicles. The data from previous runs, where to make adjustments, I even saw someone rebuilding an engine in their camp – and while that isn’t completely unheard of, it’s still crazy to witness in person. Thomas’s best pass for his Friday qualifying was an 8.73 @ 154 mph which had him sitting at 2nd in his street car class for group C. The following morning, Thomas decided to turn things up and install a smaller S/C pulley on the Whipple to allow for a bit more boost. Unfortunately a spark plug blowout caused him to lift off throttle for the first pass of the morning. The guys were able to get things fixed but without being able to make another pass, Thomas would start the following day at 14th in the Street Car Champ Class.

Ruben and I left midday on Saturday, but we were able to see some incredible runs, teamwork, and I was able to get some insane Cajun food and a $22 lemonade. Sunday was the final day for TX2K – and while I was at home constantly refreshing for updates, the guys were still out there putting in the work. By 3PM we got word that while Thomas came out on top for his first run, the 3V took a hit with a lower radiator hose blowing off. Thankfully the belly pan did it’s job and kept most of the fluids off track. But unfortunately the bad news didn’t end there. The block & heads that originally came in this Mustang had finally called it quits. For being my first time at this event, it couldn’t have been better. While I didn’t spend a lot of time out on the stands checking the races, I was with some great people “doing the thing”, as they say. And let’s not forget how I feel about Mustangs either. Seeing this GT go from a pretty meticulously built street car, to a insanely well built race car over the past years has been awesome. But being able to see it run, at this level of racing, AND standing right there on track next to it was something else.
